Season 2 Kickoff | Dreams, Drama & Detours: God’s Bigger Plan in the Life of Joseph (for Christian Teen Girls)

Hey girl! It’s been a minute, but your favorite podcast for Christian teen girls is BACK and better than ever! Are you ready to get real, get raw, and ask ALL the questions you’ve been holding in?

This season, we are diving deep — like, 14 chapters of drama, dreams, and God’s crazy plan — into the life of Joseph.

If your dreams have ever made you feel like a target, this episode is so for you. So buckle up, because Season 2 is about to hit different. Let’s go!

______

Hey, hey! Welcome back to FR, Let’s Talk — the podcast where Christian teen girls like YOU get to be 100% real and ask all the questions about faith, life, friendships, and everything in between. Whether you’ve been here since Season 1 or you just found us and are like, “Um….Who is this girl and why is she speaking my language?” — girl, you are in the right place!!!

Okay, real talk — it’s been about six weeks since our last episode, and I know that’s a hot minute. But hey, if you know me, you know that good things come to those who wait — and this season? We are not holding back!

So, I’m flying solo this season (yep, still your big sister and hype queen), and honestly, this isn’t my first rodeo going solo. I did all of Season 1 alone, but I thought I was gonna have a co-host this season — until I didn’t. Yep, that’s the kind of “I thought” moment I’m talking about.

And guess what? Figuring out how to pivot through those “I thought” moments is exactly why this season is so close to my heart.

Because sometimes, life—and faith—throws detours that feel like dead ends. Am I right?

But Joseph? He teaches us that THOSE detours are actually God’s secret highways.

Alright, now before we jump into Joseph’s story, I want to introduce a brand-new segment I’m adding this season called Funny Confessions.

Here’s the deal — we all need a reason or two every week to get in a good belly laugh. Am I right? Because let’s be honest, this world we all live in often has us feeling way too serious and a little “sus.”

Laughing? It’s straight-up soothing for the soul, and girl, I’m here for it.

So, in Funny Confessions, I’m sharing some of the embarrassing, weird little things I still do as an adult — the kind of quirky habits that make you laugh, roll your eyes, or maybe even say, “Girl, same!”

For example: I am terrified that someone is hiding behind my shower curtain, just waiting for me to get in. But honestly? What freaks me out more is the thought of them seeing me naked.

Like, that’s my biggest panic!

But here’s the real tea — if someone did sneak into my house while I was outside pulling weeds, how crazy would I be to think they’re just there for a sneaky birthday suit peek? No way. They’re definitely there to kill me.

So yeah, I’m terrified on all fronts. But the shower curtain peek? That’s my weird little sanity check to make sure I’m not walking into that horror movie scene… naked and unprepared.

It’s ridiculous. It’s awkward. But weirdly, it helps calm my crazy brain enough to actually enjoy the shower.

What about you? What’s your weird little Funny Confession? Slide into my DMs or hit me up on socials — I want to hear all your embarrassing, hilarious, quirky moves!

Alright, now back to Joseph’s story…

So, this season, we’re diving deep into the full life of Joseph.

You know the story — favorite son, technicolor coat, dreams that make him a target, betrayal, prison, and the ultimate redemption.

But here’s the deal — to really get all the juicy details, I need you to read his story for yourself. Yup the entire story of the life of Joseph.

So if you have your Bibles, open upto Genesis 37 and keep reading all the way through Genesis 50. That’s 14 chapters packed with drama, God moments, family chaos, and major lessons for us today. If you don’t have your Bible, why are you still sitting here? Hit pause. And go get it! Like, right now. Yes, Go!

Now I’ve already done the math for you.

You’re welcome.

So…If you read just two chapters a day, you’ll finish the entire life of Joseph in one week — totally doable!

So grab your favorite snack, your coziest hoodie, and maybe a highlighter, because you’re gonna want to mark some things down!

Now, before you deep dive…here’s something wild that I noticed while digging into Joseph’s story this summer:

That means Joseph has to be a seriously important guy — no joke. His story actually takes up more space in the entire book of Genesis than Abraham, Isaac, or even his own dad, Jacob.

That’s huge. It tells us one thing loud and clear: God wants us to really pay attention to Joseph’s story. Like, this isn’t just background noise — it’s front and center, babes.

And running through the whole story is this vibe I think we ALL know — the classic “I thought…” moment.

Like, “I thought this was gonna go one way, but nope, it went the total opposite.”

I thought she was going to be a good friend.

I thought I’d make the club basketball team.

I thought college would work out.

I thought God would show up by now.

Even for me, walking into this new season — I honestly thought Season 2 of the podcast would be easier.

I mean, I’ve got 40 episodes under my belt! I thought I’d hit the ground running! Right?

But no.

It’s actually been harder. Like, way harder.

And it messed with my head a little — because I started thinking, “Wait, if it’s not going smoother… is God even in this?”

That’s when it hit me: my expectations — WHAT I THOUGHT— can quietly become the biggest threat to what God actually wants to do in my life.

And when we don’t address it, we start rewriting our own narrative: like… “Maybe God isn’t really writing my story after all.”

And girl, that mindset is dangerous.

It’s subtle… but it’ll rob you of peace, purpose, and your ability to trust.

That’s why this season we’re gonna zoom way in on this “I thought” → “then what?” theme.

What happens when things don’t go the way we THOUGHT? When dreams take detours or people disappoint us or God feels silent?

Because Joseph? He THOUGHT he’d be celebrated for his dreams — instead, he was sold into slavery.

He THOUGHT things were looking up in Potiphar’s house — then boom, prison.

Over and over again, his life reads like a highlight reel of disappointment.

But here’s the thing: God’s plan? It’s way bigger than what we see in the moment.

Psalm 77:19 says it like this:"Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen."

Sometimes, God is working behind the scenes even when we can’t see a thing. His footprints, not seen. But was He still working? Of course He was.

That’s exactly where Joseph was — in the pit, in prison, in places that felt like the end — but God was still writing the story. Am I right?

Alright, grab your Bible or your favorite Bible app, and let’s dive right into the Word. We’re heading to Genesis 37:5—big 37, little 5—where Joseph shares those bold dreams that seriously made his brothers hate him even more. Let’s read it together.

Here’s Genesis 37:5-11 (NLT):

Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.

He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”

His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen, I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to you?”

His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

___

Okay, pause — let’s break this down.

First, Joseph was bold to share those dreams out loud, especially with brothers who already didn’t like him. Like, telling them that one day they’d bow down to him? That’s either brave faith or major cluelessness — or maybe both.

But here’s the context: Joseph’s dad, Jacob, had a major favoritism problem. We’re talking giving Joseph the “fancy coat,” treating him differently, and basically putting a target on his back.

That favoritism? It was basically like throwing gasoline on the jealousy fire — so Joseph was already the family’s main target before he even said a word. Oof, talk about drama!

And girl, before we move on, we have to pause and really unpack this favoritism thing — because it wasn’t just some random moment; it was baked into their whole family life from the very beginning.

Imagine growing up in a house where your dad’s favorite kid got the fancy coat, the extra love, and the clear spotlight.

That had to stir up some serious resentment in the other siblings — like, deep down, day after day. No wonder jealousy was brewing.

But let’s go a little deeper here — because this family drama? It’s not just about brothers and coats.

It goes way back to Jacob’s story.

See, Jacob didn’t just have one wife — nope, he had four. Two were sisters, Leah and Rachel, and then there were their maids, Bilhah and Zilpah. And each of these women had kids with Jacob, yup that’s right. 4 stinking moms. I mean, wow. Which obviously made the family dynamic even more complicated.

Now here’s the kicker: Joseph and Benjamin were both sons of Rachel, and Rachel, well we learn that she is Jacob’s absolute favorite wife!

So the favoritism, it wasn’t just about the kids — it was actually wrapped up in Jacob’s deep love for Rachel herself.

And that special love for their mom trickled right down to Joseph and Benjamin, and everybody knew it.

Like, it was never a secret.

All the siblings — from birth — picked up on who got the special treatment, who got the extra attention, and who was carrying the weight of that favoritism. And that, sis, is a recipe for tension and jealousy that runs deep.

So yeah, this favoritism game was part of their family DNA long before Joseph shared those bold dreams.

In fact, it shaped how every sibling saw themselves and each other. And it’s why Joseph’s dreams weren’t just about him — they were about a whole family system tangled up in love, rivalry, and some really messy feelings.

So yeah, Joseph’s brothers were wrong to hate him, but Jacob’s favoritism planted the seeds of division and competition long before those dreams were shared!

So now we can see that even though Jacob rebukes Joseph after the second dream, it’s kind of “too little, too late.”

You know what I mean?

The damage was already done.

Now here’s what I think is so powerful: Joseph knew those dreams were from God. He wasn’t just bragging or trying to stir the pot.

The truth is, Joseph was tight with God, and he knew those dreams weren’t about family drama or bragging rights — they were simply a glimpse of God’s bigger plan!

But Joseph also had to know that sharing those dreams out loud would stir the pot, right?

Like, why would he risk that?

Although I don’t definitively know, I personally think that Joseph was trying to be obedient and honest with God’s vision, even if it made him a target.

And frankly, that’s some bold faith — and maybe even a little naive.

Joseph probably thought, “They should get this, because God gave me this vision.”

But reality?

They didn’t get it at all.

And their hatred was more about their own jealousy than what Joseph thought would happen.

And that’s the tension so many of us feel: the God-sized dream versus the human messiness around us.

Sometimes our “I thought” moments come from expecting others to see what God’s doing before they’re ready.

But Joseph chose bold obedience in the middle of all the jealousy, hate, and misunderstanding.

So, yeah — living out your God-given purpose might put a target on your back. It might make people uncomfortable or even angry.

God’s plan for you is powerful and full of hope. So don’t shrink back just because others don’t get it.

And speaking of people not getting it… let me get real for a sec. Growing up, I was that competitive dancer — like, if there was an award for “Most Likely to Practice Till Midnight,” I’d win it every time.

Early mornings, late nights, sweat, tears — I was obsessed with being the best. And if you’re a perfectionist or type-A like me, you get this grind.

Every little detail mattered — the pointed toes, flawless spins, perfect smile — because dance was my sacred thing.

But here’s the kicker: even though I was grinding hard, I wasn’t bragging or showing off. I was the quiet achiever. Just doing all the things to be the best, for myself. Not for anyone else.

Yet somehow, that made me a target. Friends started pulling away, whispers floated, and suddenly my success was a threat.

It’s such a strange, harsh reality, isn’t it? When you shine, sometimes people get jealous or act salty.

Now back to Joseph — the OG dreamer (that’s original gangster if you’re like huh?)

He’s a teenager, probably around 17… so maybe slightly older than you, sharing these bold dreams that literally say his brothers will bow down to him.

His brothers already didn’t like him — jealous of the favoritism, annoyed by his “perfect kid” vibe, and then boom, he shares those dreams.

You gotta wonder — why would Joseph share those dreams out loud, knowing it’d stir the pot?

Was he naive? Or was there something bigger going on?

I think Joseph was just excited about God’s plan — maybe hoping his family would see God working through him, or just wanting to celebrate God’s blessing.

But whatever the reason, Joseph’s choice to share those dreams was bold, risky, and costly.

And girl, both Joseph and I (and maybe you too) have faced that choice — to hide your dreams or own them boldly, even if it makes you a target.

It’s messy, it’s real, and sometimes it’s downright painful.

But sometimes, God calls us to be that bold. To own our gifts, our stories, and our dreams — even when others don’t understand.

Because ultimately, it’s not about them. It’s about trusting God’s plan, no matter what.

If you’ve ever felt like hiding your talents or dimming your light to avoid drama or jealousy — I see you. You’re not alone. But let’s be real… chasing big God-sized dreams can sometimes bring out the “Queen of Side-Eye” or the “Captain of Shade” in the room. You know exactly what I’m talking about.

Jealousy is like the uninvited VIP guest at every dream party.

Picture this: You just landed the lead role in the school play — the spotlight is yours.

But then Jessie, your former BFF, suddenly acts “too busy” every time you share your excitement.

And Tyler whispers that you’re “just showing off” to everyone in the class.

Like, what?! Girl, you’re just sharing your truth and joy!

So what do you do when the “Jealousy Squad” tries to dim your shine?

Do you:a) Slide into invisibility mode and stop sharing your wins?b) Build emotional walls higher than your TikTok followers?c) Or channel your inner Joseph — keep shining bright no matter what?

Here’s the secret: jealousy hurts, but you can turn it into fuel, not frostbite.

Joseph’s brothers acted salty — even sold him into slavery — but Joseph didn’t quit dreaming. His dreams were God-given and worth every bit of the drama.

So when you face your own “Jessie” or “Tyler,” try these moves:

  • Chat it out with God — He’s your personal hype coach, ready to remind you who you are.

  • Protect your peace — step back from people who bring drama instead of support.

  • Find your cheerleaders — surround yourself with those who clap loudest for your wins.

  • Keep a dream journal — write down your goals and prayers so you can see how far you’ve come.

Here’s the thing — jealousy isn’t just about how they react. Sometimes, it’s about what we expected. Think about Joseph for a second. When God gave him those dreams, I’m sure he thought his family would celebrate, back him up, maybe even rally around what God was showing him. But instead? The people he loved most pulled away, got bitter, and even plotted against him. That’s a hard reality check.

And that’s the thing about the gap — the space between what you thought would happen and what’s actually unfolding. It’s uncomfortable. It’s lonely. And it can shake your confidence if you let it.

So let me ask you… have you ever been there?

Have you ever shared something you were so excited about, something you thought would be met with joy — only to get shade, side-eye, or silence?

Have you ever felt God plant a dream deep in your heart, but then watched it play out in a way that looked nothing like what you imagined?

Alright, before we land this plane, I want to share something new and really special with you. I’ve been thinking a lot about how powerful it is when people come together — not just physically, but in spirit and faith.

Like Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

That truth really hit me — especially for this new season — that we’re not just chatting here, we’re gathering together, even if it’s through a podcast, and God is right there with us.

So this season, I’m stepping into something new and close to my heart: at the end of every episode, I’m going to pray a prophetic prayer for you — for your dreams, your struggles, your faith journey.

I never did this in Season 1, but I felt God nudging me to lean into prayer with you in a fresh way — because I truly believe it’s a way God can move powerfully in our lives when we invite Him in.

Alright, let’s pray.

Dear Heavely Father,

Thank You for the beautiful, bold dreamer listening right now. You know her heart — the dreams she hides, the ones she’s scared to share. Thank You for planting those dreams on purpose.

When jealousy comes knocking, remind her of Joseph’s story. Help her remember that rejection doesn’t cancel Your purpose. Surround her with people who cheer her on.

Give her courage to keep dreaming loud and proud, knowing You’re writing a story bigger than she can imagine. We speak favor, protection, and boldness over her life today.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now real quick, before we go…
