Sunkissed + Sanctified | Memo 08 The Comparison Trap... Especially in Summer

Okay, can we be 100% honest for a second? I was looking at some images today—maybe it was a vacation someone took, or just a glimpse into a life that looked "easier" than mine—and I felt that tiny, familiar "sting" in my chest. It’s that thief that sneaks in and tries to steal the gratitude I just had five minutes ago.

Welcome back. Today we are tackling The Summer Comparison Trap. Because let’s be real—summer is the "World Cup" of comparing. It’s an intellectual and spiritual trap designed to make you a spectator of other people’s lives instead of the main character in the one God gave you. If you feel like your summer is "mid" because it doesn't look like someone else's reel, let’s talk about why comparison is actually a form of spiritual "un-wisdom."

The Download

Here is the download. We live in a culture that treats "highlights" as "reality." We are the first generation of women who have to navigate a 24/7 digital mirror that is constantly telling us we’re behind. We compare our "behind-the-scenes"—the messy rooms, the awkward days, the spiritual dry spells—to everyone else’s curated Chapter 10.

But listen to me: Comparison is the thief of presence. When you are busy measuring your life against hers, you aren't actually living your life. You’re ghosting your own existence. You miss the sunset in your own backyard because you’re looking at a sunset on a screen. You miss the depth of the friendships right in front of you because you’re wondering why you don't have a "squad" that looks like a photo shoot. Comparison makes you look at the blessings God hand-picked for you and treat them like "consolation prizes." It turns your heart into a desert. It makes you ungrateful for the very breath in your lungs. And babes, you are far too intelligent to let a digital image dictate your internal worth.

The Truth Check

The Truth Check is 2 Corinthians 10:12, and it is a sharp, intellectual boundary. It says: “When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”

The Bible calls comparison "unwise." Why? Because it’s a logical fallacy. You are an original. There is no "metric" to compare you to someone else because you aren't running the same race. God didn't create you to be a "version" of that other girl. He created you to be a "limited edition" masterpiece.

When you compare, you are essentially questioning God’s craftsmanship. You’re saying, "You should have given me her life/her face/her opportunities." But God is a master artist. He has a specific "lane" for you this summer—specific things only you can see, and people only you can love. But you’ll miss the miracle of your own life if you’re constantly looking over the fence. Comparison doesn't just steal your joy; it steals your purpose.

The Summer Move

So here is your Summer Move. This week, we’re doing a "Comparison Fast." Identify your "Trigger." Is it a certain person’s feed? Is it a certain social setting? Whenever you feel that "sting," I want you to stop and say: "I am thankful for her blessing, and I am satisfied in mine." Practice the high-level discipline of being happy for others without feeling "lesser" yourself. And then—put the phone away. For one hour a day, be fully, radically present in your actual life. Bake something, go for a walk, or talk to your sister. Don't document it; just be in it. Your life is happening now—don't miss it.
